I discovered clay through heartbreak nearly two years ago. From the very first moment I began working with it, I knew I had found my passion.

Not long after, my father shared something that deepened my connection to this craft — pottery runs in our blood. My grandmother, Nancy “Piscitello” Shaw, was the daughter of Sicilian immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania in the early 1900s. Generations earlier, my great-great-grandfather, Rosario Piscitello, founded Piscitello Ceramics in Sicily in 1683.

Remarkably, the tradition continues to this day. Antonio Piscitello and his family are still creating beautiful tiles, plates, and ceramic art — the only ceramic producer in Sicily to remain active for over 340 years.

That history inspires me every time I sit at my wheel here in Antioch, Illinois. When I begin with a raw ball of clay, I may have a vision in mind — but the clay always tells me what it wants to become.
